CHRISTIAN MAREK

Christian Marek is professor of Ancient History at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. His fields of research are the ancient cultures of the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, from Archaic Greece to early Byzantium, and Greek Epigraphy. He specializes in Asia Minor and is conducting epigraphical and archaeological field work in Turkey for 27 years; his latest book is a History of Asia Minor in Antiquity (2010).

Biography

Christian Marek received his Ph.D. in Ancient History at Marburg University, Germany. He was Fellow at the IAS Princeton 1992/3. He published books on: Die Proxenie (Frankfurt/ Bern 1984). Stadt, Ära und Territorium in Pontus–Bithynia und Nord–Galatia (Istanbuler Forschungen vol. 39, Tübingen 1993). Das Monument des Protogenes in Kaunos [with Cengiz Işık] (Asia Minor Studien vol. 26, Bonn 1997). Die karisch-griechische Bilingue von Kaunos [with P. Frei] (Berlin-New York 1997). Pontus et Bithynia - Die römischen Provinzen im Norden Kleinasiens (Series Orbis Provinciarum, Mainz 2003). Die Inschriften von Kaunos (Munich 2006). Geschichte Kleinasiens in der Antike [with contributions by P. Frei] (second ed. Munich 2010). Among his articles are: Die Expedition des Aelius Gallus nach Arabien im Jahre 25 v. Chr., Chiron 23, 1993, 121-156. Euboia und die Entstehung der Alphabetschrift bei den Griechen, Klio 75, 1993, 42-58.
