My recent research focuses on the formation and dynamics of patterns and nonlinear waves. More generally, my expertise is in
- Pattern formation
- Dynamics of patterns and nonlinear waves
- Applications in biology, climate, and optics
I studied Mathematics at the University of Heidelberg and received my PhD in 1993 from the University of Stuttgart. After holding postdoctoral positions at the Weierstrass Institute in Berlin and at Brown University, I was a faculty member at the Ohio State University from 1997-2004, before moving in 2004 to the University of Surrey in England. I joined the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University in 2008. Currently, I am the Chair of the Division of Applied Mathematics, and also serve as an Associate Director of ICERM.
