Yael Chatav Schonbrun

Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior

Overview

I am an Assistant Professor at Butler Hospital, in the Brown Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. My interests are in the interplay between individual psychopathology and relationship functioning. My longstanding focus is on the role of alcohol use disorders in marital functioning, and how to provide greater access to treatment of both of these presenting problems. Currently, my research focuses on how to enhance access to scientifically supported treatments for underserved populations.

Research

Research Overview

We study the associations between problematic alcohol use and couples' functioning, as well as access to scientifically supported treatments for couples and individuals with substance problems.

Research Statement

Relative to individual treatments for alcohol use problems, couples' treatments have demonstrated greater improvements in relationship satisfaction and larger reductions in frequency and severity of domestic violence. However, a gap between research and practice in alcohol treatment exists to the extent that there has been poor community-based use of empirically-supported treatments for alcohol use problems. Our research seeks to enhance access to scientifically supported treatments for individuals and couples with substance use problems.

Major Goals: The aim of this institutional research training program is to train doctoral level behavioral, medical, and social scientists and health care professionals who wish to conduct high quality research in the early intervention and treatment of alcohol and other drug problems, and to prepare them for a career with this focus.

Barriers to Entry for Couples’ Treatment of Problematic Alcohol Use

Major Goals: Sponsored by Dr. Gregory Stuart and Dr. David Strong, the aim of this project is to identify unique barriers to the dissemination of couples’ treatment of alcohol problems in a variety of patient populations, and to develop a questionnaire used to identify specific barriers that can be administered across different treatment settings.

The purpose of this grant is to develop and evaluate a brief, motivationally-based internvetion to decrease alcohol use and intimate partner violence among women who have been court mandated to domestic violence treatment.

The purpose of this grant is to develop expertise in training young investigators in conducting research on the association between alcohol use and intimate partner violence and the genetic correlates of this association.
