Professor Bower was educated at the University of Cambridge, and was a University Lecturer in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge before joining Brown as an assistant professor in 1991. He was a member of the Solid mechanics group in the School of Engineering, and worked on various problems in the field of mechanics of materials. He served as director of the Brown/GM collaborative research laboratory for computational materials research between 2006 and 2022. He also enjoyed working with Brown's talented undergraduates in the large introductory engineering courses. He retired in 2022.
