The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) supports Brown University faculty in the acquisition, performance and administration of projects and programs funded from sources outside the University. OSP is the central point of coordination for sponsored projects and the University’s authorized representative for grants, contracts and other agreements from government agencies, private industry, and non-profit foundations. The staff of OSP is committed to helping faculty seek and obtain external funding, submit proposals, administer awards, and comply with all applicable University and sponsor policies. OSP is also responsible for maintaining the University’s movable equipment inventory. OSP’s primary goal is to fulfill the crucial faculty support function outlined in Brown’s Plan for Academic Enrichment: "In order to remain a robust site for the production and communication of knowledge, Brown faculty must have the resources at their disposal that facilitate excellent teaching and research.” OSP also screens the latest available public documents to locate new funding sources, and disseminates information on these opportunities through publications and sponsor announcements. It provides access to SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network), a third-party database of funding opportunities designed to assist faculty, students, and administration in identifying sources of external support for research projects. Finally, OSP conducts frequent workshops on preparing grant proposals and searching for project funding, with additional training options being planned for the future. Capital Equipment purchased with Brown funds are the property of the University, and are carefully tracked and managed by OSP.
