Guidance for Graduate Student Principal Investigators (including medical students) on Human Research Protocols (revised 4/13/06) Any Brown University graduate student (including medical students) submitting a human research protocol for Institutional Review Board (IRB) review must have his/her protocol reviewed and approved by, at least, one advisor prior to submission of the protocol to the IRB. The protocol coversheet (IRB Form #1) must be signed by both the graduate student investigator, as the responsible person, and the advisor. In addition, if the protocol requires a full board review, both the student and his/her advisor must be available to attend the IRB meeting at which the protocol will be reviewed, in order to present the protocol or provide whatever clarification or additional information is requested by the IRB. Should the student investigator be away from campus in such a capacity that would preclude his/her attendance at the IRB meeting, attendance at the IRB meeting by his/her advisor would usually be sufficient. Questions regarding this procedure, or any human research protections questions, may be directed to Susan Rakich, IRB Coordinator, at 863-3050 or to Susan_Rakich@Brown.edu |
