GEORGE HERBERT BORTS

George Borts is an economist whose teaching and research interests have been in transportation economics, international and regional economics, and economic regulation of business activities. More recently, he has turned his attention to problems of restructuring partially regulated markets such as health care, electric power generation, and rail transportation. The motivation is a desire to understand conditions of optimality and the policies necessary to achieve them.

Biography

George Borts is a professor of economics at Brown Univesity. He holds a B.A. degree from Columbia University (1947) and M.A. (1949) and PhD. (1953) degrees from the University of Chicago. His research and teaching interests are in economics of regulation (transportation), economics of regional and international growth and capital movements, and economics of the welfare state. He has edited economic journals and has participated in public forums and discussions of federal regulatory policy.
