My work focuses on two areas. The first one is identity and group formation, with a focus on processes of racialization, and ethnic and nation formation. My second area of interest is the political economy of inequality. I have conducted research on labor markets and the informal economy in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. José Itzigsohn graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1995. He is the author of "Developing Poverty" (Penn State, 2000). This book compares the formation of the informal economy in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic and analyzes how different state policies affect the structure of the labor market and policies. He has also published numerous journal articles and book chapters on racial identity formation and the emergence of panethnicity among first and second generation immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean, and on the transnational aspects of immigrant lives.
