Funding Opportunities

The Vice President for Research is pleased to offer a number of research funding opportunities for Brown Faculty. Research Seed Funds and Salomon Awards are competitive grants distributed directly to faculty researchers and administered by the Office of the Vice President. The Departmental Research Funds for the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are distributed to departments by the Office of the Vice President for Research. Interested faculty should see their department chair about obtaining funds through these programs.

If you have any questions regarding these award programs, please contact Anne Windham in the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Research Seed Funding was created to help faculty compete more successfully for large-scale, interdisciplinary, multi-investigator grants. With an annual budget of $400,000 in 2006-2007, the Vice President for Research awarded five awards out of 22 applications.
2008-2009 funding guidelines and deadlines will be available at the end of August.

The Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Awards were established to support excellence in scholarly work by providing funding for selected faculty research projects deemed to be of exceptional merit. During 1995-1999, the program was funded by the bequest of the late Richard B. Salomon. With an annual budget of $200,000, the University has continued to fund this program since 1999 through the Graduate School and now through the Office of the Vice President for Research.
2008-2009 funding guidelines and deadlines will be available at the end of August.

Departmental Research Funds for the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences help support faculty research in departments and fields in the arts, humanities and social sciences with limited external funding opportunities. Expenses that may be supported by this fund include, but are not limited to, travel to research conferences or archives, preparation of manuscripts and articles, and securing permissions. In fiscal year 2007, $305,000 was distributed to 32 departments.
Departments will be notified of their funds in August.

Cost-sharing funds are intended to help secure specific external funding opportunities or to enable certain scholarly endeavors.  Most commonly, cost-sharing related to external funding opportunities provides a portion of the amount required to purchase equipment, for capital expenses associated with placing equipment, to purchase complementary equipment, or to support technical staff required to operate equipment. In support of other scholarly endeavors, funds may be requested to provide partial support for various faculty activities where external funding is limited.
Cost-sharing funds may be requested by completing the applicable downloadable form (see column at right) and will be considered on a case by case basis.

For questions on OVPR cost-sharing, please contact Beth Hurt (Beth_Hurt@brown.edu).
