Tony Cokes has research interests in video production, multimedia installation, documentary theory and practice, and critical uses of popular culture.

Tony Cokes is a post-conceptualist whose practice foregrounds social critique. His video, installation, sound, and public art works recontextualize appropriated materials. Cokes' video and multimedia installation works (which sometimes embrace collaborative working methodologies) have appeared in group exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou, and Documenta X. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Creative Capital, the NEA, NYSCA, and New York Foundation for the Arts. Festival screenings include Oberhausen Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Ars Electronica, and the Impakt Festival. Cokes received a B.A. from Goddard College, Vermont, participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, and has an M.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond. He currently teaches in the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University, Providence, RI.
