Stephen Kidd studies Greek literature with a focus on comedy. He received his B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis in 2002, his Ph.D. from NYU in 2011 and was a visiting assistant professor the following year at Humboldt University in Berlin. His present book project is entitled Nonsense and Meaning in Ancient Greek Comedy (under contract with Cambridge University Press). Based on his Ph.D. dissertation, this book asks why comedy, unlike other genres, gives rise to the perception that some part of it is not meaningful ("just silly", "just fun") despite the fact that new meanings continue to be discovered year after year. Other interests include the concept of play, the concept of education (paideia), Hellenistic Egypt, and the comparison of ancient literatures beyond those of Greece and Rome. |
