Nitin P. Padture joined Brown University in January 2012 as Professor in the School of Engineering, and was appointed Director of Brown's Center for Advanced Materials Research (CAMR). Previously he was College of Engineering Distinguished Professor at the Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus, and also the founding Director of the NSF-funded Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at OSU. Padture received B.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (1985), M.S. in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University (1987), and Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from Lehigh University (1991). He was a postdoctoral fellow at NIST (Gaithersburg, MD) for about 3 years, before joining the University of Connecticut (UConn, Storrs) faculty in January 1995 as Assistant Professor. He became Associate Professor in 1998 and Professor in 2003. He served as Interim Department Head at UConn for one year before moving to OSU in January 2005.
Padture's teaching and research interests are in the broad areas of synthesis/processing and properties of advanced materials used in applications ranging from jet engines to power generation to computer chips, impacting transportation, energy, and information technology sectors. Specifically, he has active research in:
1. Tailoring of advanced structural ceramics, composites, and coatings for mechanical, thermal, and optical properties:
- Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs)
- Ceramic/single-wall carbon nanotubes composites
- Ultra-high temperature ceramic composites
- Optically-transparent, mechanically-robust ceramics and composites
2. Synthesis, characterization, device fabrication, and properties of functional nanomaterials, including graphene and perovskites; studies of nanoscale phenomena in carrier transport, resistive-switching, chemical-sensing, ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, photovoltaic effect:
- Graphene-based devices
- Engineered nanowires and devices
- Novel solar cells
This research has been funded by NSF, ONR, DoE, AFOSR, DARPA, Government of Spain, State of Ohio, and industry. Padture has published 125 journal papers, which have been cited over 5,300 times (h-index 40). He is a co-inventor of 4 patents, and he has delivered over 150 invited/keynote/plenary talks/seminars in the US and abroad.
A Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, he has received that society's Roland B. Snow, Robert L. Coble, and Richard M. Fulrath awards. Padture is also a recipient of the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, and he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Recently he received the Distinguished Service Award from his alma mater Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Having served as a Principal Editor of Journal of Materials Research and an Associate Editor of Journal of the American Ceramic Society, Padture was recently appointed Editor of Scripta Materialia. He also served as a Guest Co-Editor for Materials Research Society Bulletin (October 2012 issue) focused on the TBCs theme.
Outside of work, Padture is an avid motorcyclist and the proud owner of an Aprilia Futura RST 1000. He is married to Sherilyn, a clay artist, and they have one son, Siddharth, who is an undergraduate at Boston University.
